In January 1945, the Allies drove back the German army in the Battle of the Bulge. The hamlet of Achouffe, at the bottom of the valley, had become a strategic crossing point for retreating troops. The bridge was fiercely contested but remained standing, enabling the remaining units to escape encirclement.
