The Great Fires in the Belgian Ardennes are a tradition dating back several centuries. They are celebrated on the night of 21 February, the eve of Saint Peter’s Day (22 February), which marks the beginning of spring according to the Celtic calendar.
Historically, the Great Fires were associated with rituals of purification and protection against evil forces. They were also believed to promote the return of light and warmth after the long winter months.
The practice involved lighting large fires at strategic locations in communities, often on hills or high ground, to ward off evil spirits and symbolise the rebirth of nature.
Nowadays, the Great Fires in the Belgian Ardennes have become festive community events. Villages often organise bonfires, torchlight parades, fireworks displays and other activities to celebrate this ancient tradition while bringing the community together.
It is an opportunity for residents to gather, share convivial moments and perpetuate a cultural heritage deeply rooted in the region.
