The village of Maboge and its beach on the Ourthe river

Maboge

Maboge is a nice touristic and forest village, a fishing site in river located besides the Ourthe. Maboge is built around the Saint Roch church and it has a free-access beach for taking a bath in the river. It is fitted with barbecues, games for children, a cafeteria, cabines and showers. Maboge is also the starting point of the descent in kayak of the Ourthe. In order to imagine the past, the old texts and pictures are most useful. The region was covered with a luxuriant forest of oaks, and this forest, associated to the quality of the waters favoured the important apparition of tanneries from the 17th century on in La Roche as in Houffalize, and until the begining of the 20th century. The production of "tan" (crushed oak bark), from the barking in May to the final grinding, was then an important activity. At the same time, the freeed plots gave a good vegetation for pastures.
